16th March 1936 – 10th January 2025
Hockey Ireland are saddened to learn of the passing of Thelma McLernon (née Hopkins) on January 10, 2025, in Canada, where she resided with her family. Thelma was without doubt one of the most outstanding Irish athletes ever to grace a hockey pitch and a true icon of Irish athletics.
Thelma’s illustrious hockey career began with her first international cap in 1953, marking the start of a 12-year journey that saw her dominate the sport until her retirement in 1965. Renowned for her exceptional pace, agility, and skill, Thelma played in nearly every Irish international match that took place during her career. Her performances on the field left an indelible mark on all who witnessed her brilliance. In 1965, she capped her remarkable hockey journey by earning selection for the combined Great Britain and Ireland team that toured the USA, a testament to her status as one of the game’s greats. Thelma was inducted into the Irish Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.
Thelma’s athletic prowess was not confined to the hockey field. A remarkably well-rounded athlete, she achieved international acclaim in athletics. At the 1954 European Championships Thelma claimed a gold medal in the high jump, and went on to win a silver medal in the long jump at the Commonwealth Games later that year, cementing her legacy as one of Ireland’s finest multi-sport talents. Just two years later in 1956, she broke the world record in the high jump when she lept 1.74m at the Cherryvale Playing Fields in Belfast, a feat that underscored her exceptional talent and determination.
Beyond her remarkable sporting achievements, Thelma was admired for her humility and passion for the game. Her legacy is not only preserved in the records she set and the accolades she earned but also in the memories of those who had the privilege to play alongside her or witness her in action.
Hockey Ireland and the entire hockey community extends its heartfelt condolences to Thelma’s family and friends during this time of loss.
