Early double-weekend for EY Hockey League side provides opportunity for major gains

Wednesday, September 17: This weekend our EY Hockey League sides face an early double game weekend, offering an opportunity for those at the top to build an early lead, while others will hope that positive results in one or both outings can get their seasons off the mark.

In the Women’s EYHL, Old Alex and Pembroke Wanderers kick off the weekend with a game on Friday night under the floodlights of Alexandra College as the hosts hope to bounce back from their round 1 defeat. On Saturday, the round 2 action continues as both UCD and Portadown battle to make it two wins from two in Belfield. Ulster Elks face provincial rivals Pegasus in Jordanstown as they look to recover from their shock defeat to Portadown. Loreto and Railway Union will reignite their rivalry once again as both sides jostle for early control over the league table. Queen’s University welcome Catholic Institute to The Dub, with both sides aiming to get their first points on the board after losses in Round 1.

On Sunday in the Women’s EYHL, Pegasus will host Catholic Institute in the first tie of the day, followed by a meeting between Ulster Elks and Pembroke. Queen’s University will host Old Alex, with Portadown facing EY Champions Trophy winners Railway Union, and Loreto will close out the day as they host UCD.

On Saturday in the Men’s EYHL, Monkstown face 2024/25 runners up Three Rock Rovers in a Leister derby. YMCA look to grab a second win on the bounce when they host an Avoca side that will be keen to right the ship after a tough opening weekend against Lisnagarvey. Corinthian make the trip North to face a Lisnagarvey side that look dead set on retaining their title. Pembroke Wanderers welcome Cookstown to Serpentine Avenue as both look to go one better than their draws last weekend. And Banbridge will look to keep pace at the top of the table as they face newly promoted Cork C of I in Havelock Park.

On Sunday in the Men’s EYHL, Cookstown will face fellow promoted side Cork C of I while Banbridge welcome YMCA to Havelock Park. Monkstown welcome Lisnagarvey to Rathdown School hoping to derail the title holders. Pembroke Wanderers go head-to-head with Avoca in a rivalry that grows in fierceness with each meeting. Corinthian ad Three Rock Rovers close the weekend with a matchup in St Columba’s in the early evening.
