Saturday, February 28: Critical results across the AIG Irish Senior Cup saw Railway Union get their cup defence off to a winning start, Catholic Institute pick up a crucial result to keep their topflight hopes alive, and Cork Harlequins and Ards remain unbeaten in the Men’s and Women’s EYHL2, respectively.
In the Women’s AIG Irish Senior Cup, Railway Union put in a faultless performance against visiting Ulster Elks to get their title defence off to a flying start. A goal from Aisling Utri set Railway on their way before a Matilde Errico brace put the game beyond reach.
In the Women’s EYHL, Catholic Institute pulled off an incredible win away from home against Portadown to lift themselves out of the relegation zone, with a commanding 3-1 win.
In the Men’s EYHL, Cookstown and Cork C of I saw their survival hopes dashed further with defeats to visiting Pembroke Wanderers and Three Rock. In Cork a Ryan Spencer goal and Ben Johnson brace gave TRR control before C of I’s Harry Jackson pulled a goal back in the last ten. But any hopes of a fightback were quickly dashed by Conor Walsh adding a fourth for the visitors. At Camlin Park, Cookstown led early but Pembroke fought back, with set pieces defining the game as Pembroke saw out a 6-2 win.
In the Women’s EYHL2, Ards made no mistake away to Ulster rivals Lisnagarvey, maintaining their unbeaten start with a 5-0 win. Five different scorers helped Ards maintain their charge towards an immediate return to the topflight.
In the Men’s EYHL2, Queen’s University staved off a late South Antrim fight back to record a second win in the competition and keep pace with the top sides. In Munster, Cork Harlequins made it three from three with a confident win over Catholic Institute, with Julian Dale, Sam Dale, and Andrew Dale all among the scorers, along with Daniel Bywater.
