The Fundamentals of Coaching Hockey course is designed to introduce coaches to the core principles of coaching hockey and provide a strong foundation for future coach development. Suitable for new and aspiring coaches, the course focuses on the essential skills required to plan and deliver effective, enjoyable and player-centred sessions.

Throughout the course, participants will learn how to prepare and organise coaching sessions, break down and teach key hockey techniques, and develop these techniques into skills through the use of conditioned games and activities. The course provides coaches with the knowledge and confidence to create positive learning environments that support player development.

The course is delivered over six hours, either as a full-day workshop or across two evenings. Courses are offered centrally by Hockey Ireland, while clubs may also host a course where sufficient demand exists and tutor availability allows.

To attend the course, participants must be aged 16 or over on the day of the course. In line with Irish legislation, anyone undertaking regular coaching activities involving children or vulnerable adults must complete Garda Vetting through Hockey Ireland.
