Loreto seal Women’s EY Hockey League title as Three Rock Rovers force Men’s league to go down to the wire with home win over Lisnagarvey.

Saturday, April 5: An exhilarating penultimate weekend in the EY Hockey League Division 1 wasn’t short of drama.

In the Women’s EYHL, Loreto finally secured their second league title on the bounce with a well fought away win to UCC. Catholic Institute and UCD played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in Rosbrien, with the home side securing the bonus point shootout. The result sees UCD complete their turnaround to climb into the Champions Trophy Play-Off places while Institute go two points clear in third. Pembroke Wanders nabbed a tight 1-0 win at home to Ards, securing them place in the topflight next season and condemning Ards to relegation.

In the Men’s EYHL, Three Rock Rovers came from behind to produce a statement win over current league leaders Lisnagarvey. The two sides are now level on points at the top of the table to tee up a tense final round next weekend. Corinthian caused a major upset against Banbridge to maintain their place in the Play-Off places, while Avoca continued their pursuit with a 5-2 win away to UCD. Monkstown had to settle for a bonus point draw away to Annadale, with the point for the Ulster side enough to keep their slim chances of survival alive. And YMCA produced a strong second half performance to beat Pembroke Wanderers in Wesley College.

In the Women’s EYHL2, Muckross squeezed past a stubborn Cork Harlequins side in Pool A. In Pool B, Queen’s University showed no sluggishness from their long journey to Cork, beating Ashton 7-0 to secure top spot, while Lurgan hold Corinthian to a draw to boost their confidence going into the Play-Offs.

In the Men’s EYHL2, Cookstown completed an unbeaten pool stage with a home win over Munster side Bandon, while Cork C of I left it to the final quarter to beat Kilkenny, in Pool A. In Pool B, Cork Harlequins produced two wins over Kilkeel, with Julian Dale netting five times to give the Cork side confidence going into the Play-Offs, and Instonians secured their place in third with a win against Clontarf in Dublin.
