Reigning Champions prevail and newly promoted sides shine in opening round of the EY Hockey League

Saturday, September 13: A thrilling opening round to the EY Hockey League saw some major upsets as reigning champions begin their campaigns with wins.

In the Women’s EYHL, Portadown made a statement in their first game in the topflight, beating Ulster Elks in their own backyard. Reigning champions Loreto left it until the second half to secure a win away to Catholic InstituteUCD came out on top of their college clash with Queen’s University. Railway Union cruised to a 3-0 win at home to Old AlexPegasus versus Pembroke finished in a scoreless draw, with the home team Pegasus taking the bonus point, 2:1 in the shootout.

In the Men’s EYHL, Cork C of I lost to visitors YMCAPembroke Wanderers came from two goals down to salvage a draw and the bonus point against CorinthianLisnagarvey cruised to a comfortable win over Avoca as they begin their title defense with intent. Cookstown faught back against Monkstown to record their first point, with Monkstown winning the shootout to take the bonus point. And in the late game, Banbridge came out on top of a tense encounter with Three Rock Rovers in Havelock Park, with a late Matthew McKee goal putting the game beyond reach.
