Sides take advantage of stormy Saturday to climb the table in the EY Hockey League.

EY Hockey League Results – Saturday, October 4

Saturday, October 4: Despite the widespread disruption of Storm Amy resulting in a number of postponements in the EY Hockey League, four games survived the adverse weather.

In the Women’s EYHL, Queen’s University continued to show their intent to make their mark on the league with a 5-2 win over fellow Ulster side Ulster Elks. Despite going a goal down in the first quarter, a hat-trick from Jenna McCarlie saw them turn the tides on the game to lead 3-1. Elks reduced the deficit in quarter three but two goals in the closing minutes of the game secured Queen’s third win of the campaign.

Elsewhere, Pembroke Wanderers edged Catholic Institute in the only out of province clash of the day. A goal early in quarter two put Pembroke ahead before Abigail O’Malley put the game to bed in the final minutes of quarter 3 to secure a potentially crucial three points for Pembroke as they grab their first win of the campaign and climb to fourth in the table.

Railway Union survived an early scare against UCD to record a 3-1 win over the students and climb to joint top of the table. UCD scored with the first attack of the game through Rebecca Carthy, but Railway fought back in the second half, with Lily Lloyd drawing them level before Sophia Cole scored from the penalty sport and Hollai Quinn put the game beyond reach from open play in the final minute.

In the Men’s EYHL, a Dublin Derby between Monkstown and Corinthian was the only game to go ahead. Monkstown surged to a comprehensive win with three goals in the opening quarter propelling them into the lead. A goal early in the second half extended their lead to four before Corinthian clawed a consolation goal back in the closing minutes of quarter 3. The win sees Monkstown climb to third in the standings to put pressure on Pembroke Wanderers and Banbridge.
