EYHL MEN’S DIVISION 1

The weather was the only real winner in this weekend’s action in the Men’s EYHL Division 1.

The first game that was due to take place between Instonians and Annadale was postponed on Friday night due to a frozen pitch.

Fast forward to Saturday and Lisnagarvey’s game with UCD at Comber Road also bit the dust due to the pitch being frozen.

Glenanne’s match with Banbridge was also postponed due to a frozen pitch at St.Andrew’s College.

The same fate also befell the fixture between Three Rock Rovers and YMCA at Grange Road .

Monkstown against Corinthians in the Mens Division was the second senior game due to take place at Rathdown School and  it was the only game in this Division to survive and the details are shown below.

Monkstown 3 Corinthians 2.

This game at Rathdown School turned out to be the only game in the Men’s Division to survive the big freeze. The visitors took the lead when Max Neill scored from open play in the twelfth minute.

Mark Gibbons got Monkstown back on level terms when he converted a penalty corner in the sixteenth minute. It was 1-1 at half-time.  Corinthians regained the lead in the thirty-eighth minute when Daniel Mark Bakker converted a penalty corner.

Monkstown responded when Mark Gibbons got his second of the match in the forty-third match from a penalty corner to leave the score 2-2.  Just when it looked like Corinthians might have done enough to secure a point from the game, Monkstown were awarded a penalty stroke in the fifty sixth minute.

Lee Cole as he has done a lot recently made no mistake from the penalty stroke to secure all three points for the Sky Blues. It finished Monkstown 3 Corinthians 2.

EYHL WOMEN’S  DIVISION 1

Monkstown’s game with Ulster Elks at Rathdown which was down for decision at 12:45 was the first of the weekend’s games to bite the dust   due to a frozen pitch.

Corinthians against Catholic Institute due to take place at the top of the hill in Whitechurch was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Even being at sea level relatively speaking didn’t improve matters as Loreto’s tie with Pegasus due to be played at Beaufort at the bottom of a hill also failed to take place due to a frozen pitch.

Railway Union’s game with Old Alexandra also was postponed. On this occasion while the pitch itself had defrosted, issues with the watering system brought about the postponement at Park Avenue.

The late game between Pembroke Wanderers against UCD was due to take place at Serpentine Avenue with a 4 p.m. start

Pembroke Wanderers 0 UCD 0

This game at Serpentine Avenue turned out to be the only game in the Women’s Division to survive the big freeze. Both sides created a handful of worth while opportunities in a very tight and closely fought game.

Neither side could make any of their four penalty corners apiece count. Good saves from Erika Gallagher for UCD and Aoife Glennon in the Pembroke Wanderers goals respectively made sure that the game remained scoreless throughout the first two quarters.

A scoreless first half was followed by not too many goalmouth opportunities but those that were the best of them fell to UCD who were unable to convert them into goals.

The third and fourth quarters followed a similar pattern and it would be Pembroke Wanderers who went into this game in third place and remained there at the final whistle who would be the happier of the two sides with this result.

For UCD another two points dropped and yet another draw. Final score was Pembroke Wanderers 0 UCD 0
