Umpiring is a fantastic way to learn more about hockey, to develop your skills and progress through the umpiring grades. Whether you want to get involved at club level, or have aspirations to umpire at the international stage, you can gain help and support from Hockey Ireland, your provincial umpiring association and the Irish Hockey Umpires Association (IHUA). Online Rules TestAs a new or inexperienced umpire, you can start by completing your online rules test. If you require help with how to navigate the e-learning course, click here. This will give you an introduction into the rules of hockey before progressing on to your Fundamentals of Umpiring. 

Fundamentals of Umpiring – once you have completed your online rules test, you can start working towards the Fundamentals of Umpiring Award.

To achieve your ‘Fundamentals of Umpiring Award’ you must take the following steps 

  1. Complete your ‘Online Rules Test’
  2. Complete 4 sections online (Module 1)
  3. Attend a Live Webinar (Module 1 – you can book this once you have completed your online section by emailing niamh.fahey@hockey.ie)
  4. Attend a practical workshop in your province (Module 2 – booking will be made available online)

Young Umpire ProgrammeFor those aged 15-18, it is a good idea to get signed up to a Young Umpire programme where you will learn the basics of umpiring, and get to give it a try in a safe and supportive environment.
