Hockey Ireland Domestic Weekend Results Round-Up: Saturday April 6

EY HOCKEY LEAGUE MEN’S DIVISION 1

THREE ROCK ROVERS 2 MONKSTOWN  2

Visitors Monkstown started strongly and took the lead through a converted penalty corner from Stephen Cole in the 5^th minute. They still led 1-0 at half-time. Davy Carson increased the visitor’s lead in the 43^rd minute with a goal from open play. Three Rock Rovers eventually responded in the 45th minute when Ben Johnson converted a penalty corner.  Alistair Empey’s converted penalty corner in the 50th minute  secured the share of the spoils for Rovers.

CORINTHIANS 3 ANNADALE 1

Corinthians opened the scoring in the 9th minute when Stephen Reid scored from open play.  They led 1-0 at half-time. Corinthians increased their lead in the 41^st minute when Davy Howard converted a penalty stroke. 2-0 to the hosts. Annadale got on the scoresheet when Charlie McKeown scored from open play in the 44^th minute. 2-1 but Corinthians put the result beyond doubt when Max Neill scored from open play in the final four minutes to seal a win for Corinthians. It ended 3-1. After this result Annadale remain five points ahead of UCD.

YMCA 4 INSTONIANS 0

YMCA ended up with a rather comfortable margin of victory in this game at Wesley College. Adam Walker put them 1-0 ahead in the 6^th when he converted a penalty corner. Instonians provided stubborn resistance in the first half and Grant Glutz’s goal in the 32^nd minute was the only addition to the scoresheet by halftime where YMCA led by 2-0. Harry McCarthy converted another penalty corner in the 53^rd minute to make it 3-0 and three minutes from time Tevin Kok from open play completed the scoring to make it 4-0 at full-time.

BANBRIDGE 5 UCD 0

Not a good day at the office for the Students who are fighting for their survival in the EYHL Men’s Division 1. By contrast a good day at the office for the defending champions hoping to retain the title for another season. Louis Rowe opened the scoring in the 8^th minute with a field goal for 1-0. It was a lead they held onto until half-time. Matthew McKee added another goal in the 36^th minute to increase Bann’s lead to 2-0. Louis Rowe got his second goal of the game to make it 3-0 in the 44^th minute. Philip Browne scored two penalty corners in the 59^th minute and 70^th minute respectively to complete the scoring. For UCD they must win their remaining games and hope Annadale lose their remaining games.

LISNAGARVEY 0 GLENANNE  0

It was honours even in every respect at Comber Road wen Lisnagarvey and Glenanne played out a coreless draw. You would have got generous odds on this game ending scoreless whatever about it being in stalemate as Glenanne and Lisnagarvey have been two of the most prolific goalscoring teams in the League all season long. It wasn’t that chippy a game in the 31^st minute Matthew Nelson was green carded, but Glenanne did not take advantage of having an extra player. Later in the game in the

42^nd minute both James Corry of Lisnagarvey and Sannon Boucher of Glenanne were green carded both teams being reduced to 10 players each. Neither side could capitalize on the extra room on the field.

Neil Byrne was green carded in the 45^th minute and Lisnagarvey did not take advantage of the man advantage either.  Not even Theo Boitel’s yellow card in the 65^th minute made any difference.  All that remains to be done is to congratulate both goalkeepers on keeping clean sheets in this game and move on. So take a bow James Milliken (Lisnagarvey) and David Lawless (Glenanne).

 

EYHL WOMEN’S DIVISION  1 

PEGASUS 3 CATHOLIC INSTITUTE 3

Pegasus are determined to hang on to their EYHL Division 1 status and proved the point in this game at Queen’s University Sportsground against Irish Senior Cup Finalists Catholic Institute. Zara Malseed gave Pegasus the lead with a goal from open play in the 11^th minute. Sophie McDowell increased their lead in the 22^nd with another open play goal to make it 2-0. Catholic Institute responded through a goal from Leah Cleary from open play in the 29^th minute and it was 2-1 at half time. Pegasus captain Ruth McCandless scored another open play goal in the 46^th minute to leave Pegasus leading by 3-1. Catholic Institute showed they are made of sterner stuff and responded with goals from Sarah Fitzgerald from a converted penalty corner in the 53^rd minute to make it 3-2. They secured a point then when Naomi Carroll’s 59^th goal from open play secured a point for the visitors and the game ended 3-3.

OLD ALEXANDRA 3 CORINTHIANS 1

Old Alexandra secured another precious win in their quest for a play off berth with this game against Corinthians. Abi Russell converted a 2^nd minute penalty corner for 1-0. She got her second of the game from open play in the 9^th minute to leave the Milltown based side 2-0 ahead. A converted penalty corner in the 35^th minute appeared to have sealed the win on the stroke of half-time where they led 3-0. Corinthians might be struggling for points this season, but they don’t admit defeat without putting up some kind of a fight and Ava Maleady’s 56^th minute field goal was just reward for their efforts but alas that was all they could muster on this occasion. It finished Old Alex 3 Corinthians 1.

LORETO 2 MONKSTOWN 2

Loreto the recently crowned League champions don’t give up many points in the League during the current season so it was a bit of surprise that they gave up two points on this occasion and Monkstown deserve great credit for helping themselves to one of those. Chloe Watkins from open play in the first minute gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. Yasmin Pratt equalised for the homesters in the 7^th minute. Rebecca Carthy restored Monkstown’s lead in the 27^th minute with another goal from open play and they led 2-1 at half-time. Champions don’t like losing and hate losing at home even more so. Rachel Kelly’s 57^th minute goal from open play secured a point for the Champions. The game ended 2-2.

RAILWAY UNION 4 PEMBROKE WANDERERS 1

Railway Union Irish Senior Cup finalists had a terrific 4-1 win over local rivals Pembroke Wanderers in this derby game at Park Avenue. Niamh Shaw with a goal from open play gave the hosts the lead. Orla Macken converted a penalty corner to get Pembroke on the scoresheet for the equaliser. Sarah Hawkshaw gave Railway Union the lead with a goal from open play to make it 2-1 to Railway. Niamh Carey increased their lead with another open play goal for 3-1 and Katie Mullan sealed the win to make the final scoreline Railway Union 4 Pembroke Wanderers 1.

UCD 1 ULSTER ELKS 2

UCD played Ulster Elks in a real six pointer in the EYHL Women’s Division 1. Ulster Elks needed points for two completely different reasons 1/ to make themselves mathematically safe from relegation 2/ to try and secure 6^th place and a route to the play-offs. For UCD reason 2 was the most pressing need. Despite being relatively speaking back to full strength after not having their internationals available and also Katie Jane Marshall who missed the Irish Senior Cup semi-final on Wednesday night due to a slight injury, they didn’t deliver on the promise that their superior ball possession and indeed the number of penalty corners they racked up in this game suggested they should. Instead, it was the visitors with a fraction of the possession and set pieces, who took the lead when Chloe Stewart scored from open play in the 12^th minute. After a period when the hosts dominated possession and had a number of penalty corner opportunities, it was Ulster Elks who increased their lead when Serena Campuzano scored from open play in the 22d minute to leave the visitors 2-0 ahead at half-time. Penalty corners are the most important set piece in the game of hockey. How often has that mantra been drilled into hockey players young and old? Well, it looked as if UCD Women’s firsts had forgotten this pearl of wisdom as it was only their final penalty corner of the day having been awarded more than half a dozen that hit home. By then Mikayla Power’s late finish was a mere consolation goal. To be fair in recent weeks, penalty corners had actually been one of their strengths. The final score was UCD 1 Ulster Elks 2 .

EYHL MEN’S DIVISION 2 POOL A 

BANDON P-P QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY

This game was postponed on Friday.

BANGOR  1 AVOCA  2

Bangor took on Avoca in the EYHL 2 Pool A at Bangor Arora. There was nothing to separate the sides in either quarters 1 or 2 and so it was still 0-0 at half-time. The flood gates opened relatively speaking after the commencement of the third quarter. Daragh Grogan gave the visitors the lead in the 38^th minute with a goal from open play. And James Holley equalised for the hosts in the 58^th minute from open play. The visitors desperately needed to win to have any hope of making the knockout stages and Marshall Puzey’s 66^th minute converted penalty corner was enough to get them full points.

 

EYHL MEN’S DIVISION 2 POOL B

CORK CHURCH OF IRELAND 5 RAILWAY UNION  2

Jonathan Bruton opened the scoring for Cork C of I in the 17^th minute from open play. 1-0 to Cork Church of Ireland. Skipper Ian Balding made it 2-0 for the hosts in the 29^th minute from a converted penalty corner. And the hosts led 2-0 at half-time. Railway  responded  through a David Sheill goal from open play in the 45^th minute  and Jan Trejbal equalised in the 52d minute from a converted penalty corner.

COOKSTOWN 3 SOUTH ANTRIM 1

Cookstown took the lead in the 6^th minute when Michael Kerr scored from open play. The visitors equalisd in the 12th minute from Oliver Patterson who converted a penalty corner. Scott McCabe restored the lead for the hosts in the 17^th minute with another goal from open play. Daniel Kerr’s open play goal on 53 minutes sealed the win for Cookstown by 3-1.

 

EYHL WOMEN’S DIVISION 2 POOL A

AVOCA 2 BELFAST HARLEQUINS 2

A very closely fought and cagey affair at Newpark school was still scoreless at half-time. Avoca took the lead through a converted penalty corner by Hannah De Burgh-Whyte in the 52^nd minute. And another Belfield alumni scored again for Avoca two minutes later when Ciara Feely got a goal from open play to leave the hosts ahead 2-0. Two late goals from the visitors secured a share of the spoils. Claire Whiteside scored in the 66^th minute and Jenna Henry equalised a minute from time to secure a 2-2 draw.

 

The second pool A game is due to take place on Sunday.

 

EYHL  WOMEN’S DIVISION 2 POOL B 

ARDS 3 UNIVERSITY OF GALWAY 0 

Connacht Division 1 table toppers University of Galway had no answer to Ards onslaught in this tie at Londonderry Park. Elizabeth Holden opened the scoring for Ards in the 28^th minute. It was 1-0 at half-time. Ards increased their lead in the 37^th minute when Ali Scott scored from open play. Susannah Cotter completed the scoring two minutes later to seal a 3-0 win for Ards.

LURGAN 2 UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK 2

The Junior High School was the venue for this game in the EYHL Women’s Division 2 Pool B game on Saturday where UCC provided the opposition to hosts Lurgan. Veteran Stephanie Thompson opened the scoring when she converted a penalty corner on the half hour mark. Half-time saw no change in the scoreline, Lurgan still 1-0 ahead. Abi O’Mahony equalised for UCC in the 45^th minute from open play to make the score 1-1. Jane Murphy gave the visitors a lead in the 56^th minute with a goal from open play. But Chloe Gillard clawed back an equaliser for Lurgan with just a minute remaining to seal a 1-1 draw.
