INSTONIANS V UCD was postponed owing to the death of Derek Watt, past President of Ulster Hockey and the father of Stephen Watt, Instonians’ coach. Condolences to the Watt family, their clubmates and their many friends on their tragic loss. The game will be rescheduled for later in the season.
GLENANNE 2-0 CORINTHIAN
The early match this weekend was at St. Andrew’s College where fourth placed Glenanne hosted seventh placed Corinthian. Glenanne and Corinthians produced a scoreless first quarter and indeed first half. Things began to change in the fourth and final quarter when they opened the scoring on fifty-five minutes when Gary Shaw scored from open play. Glenanne captain Bradley Venter made the points secure with another goal in the sixty-eighth minute. Given their women’s team also were defeated it was a bad day at the office for Corinthians as a club.
THREE ROCK ROVERS 3-4 BANBRIDGE
League leaders Banbridge travelled to join table toppers Three Rock Rovers in the tie of the round. And what a match they produced a seven-goal thriller the outcome of which sees Banbridge open up a gap at the top of the table. Ben Johnson opened the scoring for Rovers with a goal from open play in the second minute. Josh Moffett replied with a goal from open play in the fifth minute to leave the score 1-1. Bann then took the lead when Moffett got his second goal of the game in the seventeenth minute. Philip Brown increased their lead in the twenty-sixth minute from a converted penalty corner. Three Rock responded through Alistair Empey who got their second goal of the game in the thirty-fifth minute from open play. 2-3 at this stage but Johnny McKee got a goal from open play to leave Banbridge 4-2 ahead after forty minutes. There was still time for Three Rock to respond but they did so through Ben Johnson’s second of the game in the sixty-forth minute. It was Three Rock Rovers 3 Banbridge 4 at this point but there was no further scoring, and the defending League champions came out of Grange Road with all three points.
YMCA 2-2 LISNAGARVEY
Fifth placed YMCA took on third placed Lisnagarvey at Wesley College. A scoreless first half was followed by an equally blank third quarter but the game burst into life in the final quarter. YMCA took the lead through Ben O’Grady’s converted penalty corner in the fifty-fifth minute. Matthew Nelson grabbed an equaliser in the fifty -eighth minute from open play. YMCA regained their lead in the sixtieth minute from a converted penalty corner. Lisnagarvey grabbed a draw from the jaws of defeat in the sixty fifth minute with a second goal of the game for Matthew Nelson from open play. It finished YMCA 2 Lisnagarvey 2.
MONKSTOWN 5-1 ANNADALE
Sixth placed Monkstown took on ninth placed Annadale in the final match of the round. After a scoreless first quarter, Keith Kenning got Monkstown off the mark just before half time to leave the Sky Blues 1-0 ahead at the break. A scoreless third quarter was followed by an absolutely breathless fourth quarter. Two goals apiece for Monkstown’s Lee Cole and Jeremy Duncan and a reply from Annadale’s Fergus Gibson left the final score Monkstown 5 Annadale 1.

This top of the table clash at Beaufort was the outstanding fixture from Round 5 of the EYHL Women’s Division of the day. Loreto took the lead in the seventh minute with a Rachel Kelly goal from open play. They increased their lead in the sixteenth minute through Rebekah Fitzpatrick, to lead 2-0 at the end of the first quarter. Railway Union responded in the twenty-ninth minute through a Sarah Patton goal from open play to leave the half-time score 2-1 to Loreto. There was no further scoring in quarters three and four and the score remained the same at the final whistle. The 2-1 win sees Loreto go three points clear of Railway Union at the top of the table.
CORINTHIANS 0-1 ULSTER ELKS
Ulster Elks visited Corinthians and needed only a single goal to secure the points in the EYHL Women’s Division 1 clash at St. Columba’s College. Elks gained a modicum of revenge for being beaten by Corinthians in last seasons EYHL 2 final at the same venue when Serena Campuzzano put them a goal up from open play as early as the sixth minute of the game. There was no further scoring in quarters two , three and four and the 1-0 scoreline was enough to secure all three points for the visitors.
UCD 1-1 OLD ALEXANDRA
The defending League Champions as well as today’s opponents have been through a period of transition in the close season with many departures and many new arrivals in their respective playing staffs. It will take a period of time for the new players to adjust to this level of hockey in Ireland’s top flight. UCD took the lead through a penalty corner converted by Sophia Cole in the eleventh minute. UCD came close to scoring hitting the bar and the post but on days when the luck is with you these chances go in…. this was not one of those days. Old Alexandra responded when Abby Russell reacted fastest in the sixty fifth minute to score and make the score 1-1. Both sides had further chances to score in the closing minutes and the last action of the match was a penalty corner for UCD which remained unconverted it finished UCD 1 Old Alexandra 1.

PEMBROKE WANDERERS 1-2 CATHOLIC INSTITUTE
Amy Kate Trevor scored in the fifth minute to give Pembroke Wanderers an early lead from a converted penalty corner. It was a lead that lasted until half time.
At the start of the third quarter Catholic Institute were back in the match when Aoife Hickey converted a penalty corner on thirty-six minutes. Catholic Institute turned things in their favour in the fifty-third minute when a Naomi Carroll goal from open play was enough to give them all three points in a 2-1 win. For Pembroke Wanderers a first defeat of the campaign and for Catholic Institute a badly needed win.
MONKSTOWN 2-1 PEGASUS
Bottom of the table Monkstown got their first points of the season and their first win when they came from behind to beat Pegasus by 2-1 at Rathdown school. A scoreless first quarter was followed by two further scoreless quarters to leave the score still 0-0 at the end of the third quarter. Zara Malseed gave the visitors the lead in the fifty-first minute. But Monkstown dug deep and equalised through a penalty corner converted by Sophie Moore in the sixty-fifth minute. Less than a minute later Monkstown sealed the victory when Nicci Daly scored from open play to secure Monkstown’s first win of the current season. Monkstown struggled in the bottom end of the table for most of last season and only secured safety near the end of last season. On this occasion, having secured a win much earlier in the season, they should reach safety much sooner and this result could mark the beginning of a resurgence.
