The Level 2 Coaching Course is designed for people coaching teams who wish to advance their coaching skills and knowledge. The course prepares coaches to develop skills over a series of sessions through the development of game based practices. The course is aimed at people who are coaching club and school teams and includes a higher level of technical development than the Level 1 course as well as the introduction of core tactics.

Candidates MUST have completed Hockey Ireland Level 1 Coaching Course or show evidence of completing a similar award in another country. All candidates must have a Safeguarding 1 – Child Welfare & Protection in Sport Course Certificate or equivalent, completed within the last 3 years.

Irish legislation now requires that anyone carrying out activities involving regular contact with Under-18s and vulnerable adults be Garda vetted through their National Governing Body. Hockey Ireland provides this service for hockey clubs and branches. See Support/Safeguarding for more information.

The course is 4 days in duration and attendance at the whole course is essential.

The course reinforces the themes in the Level 1 as well as introducing the following themes:

  • Outletting and pressing principles
  • Circle entry and circle defence principles
  • Goal scoring skills
  • Midfield control and build-up principles
  • Advanced goalkeeping
  • Advanced penalty corner skills
  • Player/squad interaction
  • Introduction to physical development of players

If you are interested in attending this year’s Level 2, please email coaching@hockey.ie giving a detailed description of your coaching history including the teams and the level you have coached at as well as any other information that may be relevant to your application. As there are only 16 places on the course, priority will be given to coaches coaching at EYHL or interprovincial level.

Closing date for applications will be provided when the next Level 2 course dates are announced. Applicants will be informed shortly thereafter.
